The Identity Construction and Self-Perception of Queer Sinti and Roma

This thesis examines the identity construction and self-perception of queer Sinti and Roma in Central Europe. Sinti and Roma are at the fringe of society and are subjected to discrimination and antiziganist stigmatisation. As a result, identity construction involves greater effort and leads to the creation of a collective identity that provides Sinti and Roma with a sense of belonging. Queer Sinti and Roma are exposed to intersectional discrimination on the axes of racism and homophobia and occupy a special position within identity formation. Incorporating data from three narrative interviews, testimonies and selected chapters from an autobiographical book, this study demonstrates that intersectional discrimination highly influences identity formation within queer Sinti and Roma. It was shown that identity construction was shaped by concepts like Masking Identity and the Perception of Othering that can be overcome by finding spaces of Belonging and social networks that display Allyship. The establishment of safe spaces for queer Sinti and Roma are crucial for the creation of spaces of Belonging and the manifestation of a mutual group identity. Representation of ethnic minorities in Czech TV shows

This thesis covers representation of ethnic minorities in Czech television scripted shows. In the theoretical part the main issues are explained, that have something to do with this topic, such as ethnicity and media representation. This phenomenon is also put into a wider complex and examples are given. In the practical part the thesis has a narrative analysis of chosen titles with focus on ethnic characters.

Politika boje proti terorismu v jihovýchodní Asii - případová studie Filipín a Thajska

Terrorism is one of the most serious security threats in current globalized world. Terrorists, unlike national states, are able to quickly adapt themselves to new conditions and socio-political environment, which, combined with a weak state structure, creates the right conditions for their existence. The purpose of the diploma thesis is to propose changes to counter-terrorism policies in the Philippines and Thailand. The theoretical part approaches the issue of terrorism and attention is paid to the importance of counter-terrorism. The second part analyzes the causes of terrorism in the Philippines and Thailand and also analyzes the attitudes of states in question of responding to terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism policies. Based on comparisons and assessments of government approaches to this issue, provisions are proposed to contribute to a more effective solution of national terrorism in the future.

Identity of descendants growing up in the environment of the Vietnamese and Ukrainian minority in the Czech Republic

This bachelor thesis focuses on members of the Ukrainian and Vietnamese minorities in the Czech Republic. Initially, it deals with the outline of general information about the mentioned minorities, their history within the Czech social environment and socio-cultural aspects. The central issue of the thesis lies in the description of the identity of the descendants of migrants who grew up in a culturally inhomogeneous environment. The aim of the thesis is to describe the aspects involved in the process of identity formation of these children, taking into account general information about identity, the social and cultural elements typical for defined minorities. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part presents basic information about the Vietnamese and Ukrainians in the Czech Republic, describes the historical circumstances of their arrival in the Czech Republic, defines the basic concepts and attitudes that are further worked within the thesis, elaborates the concept of identity within the appropriate limits for the stated goal. The practical part is based on qualitative research using the technique of structured interviews withseveral members out of the researched groups. The aim of the research is to analyse and then compare the statements of respondents on the topic of their identity.

Minority Policy Towards Lusatian Sorbs in the GDR

The topic of the bachelor thesis is minority policy towards Lusatian Sorbs in the German Democratic Republic. The thesis focuses mainly on the period from the establishment of the East German state to the beginning of the 1970s. The aim of the thesis is to discover which aspects of Leninist nationality policy can be found in the East German model of minority policy directed towards the Lusatian Sorb ethnic group. The thesis first briefly introduces who the Lusatian Sorbs are and describes their changing position in the 20th century. This work then provides a definition of ethnicity and other important concepts established by the Norwegian anthropologist T.H. Eriksen. Following terminology, the approach to ethnicity in the Soviet Union and East Germany is described and the most important aspects of Soviet nationality policy, with an emphasis on "korenization" (nativization), which was an important part of Leninist nationality policy. Similarly, the thesis deals with nationality policy in the GDR and examines the application of Leninist nationality policy in the work of the umbrella organization Domowina and in bilingual education in Lausitz. Causes of conflict in Africa. The case of the Democratic Republic of Congo

This thesis aims to explore selected theoretical approaches investigating the causes of conflicts on the African continent and then try to apply it to the particular case of the Democratic Republic of Congo and its second war, running from 1998-2003, and then assess the impact of each selected causes of this particular Congolese conflict. This Work in the first chapters outlines the chosen theories related to the causes of armed conflicts in Africa, focusing on three selected causes of conflict: natural resources, ethnicity and weak state. These chapters are theoretical basis for the analysis found in the final chapter. It then evaluates the impact of chosen variables on the outbreak of the Congolese war. Based on the analysis the author draws the following conclusions: 1st the main cause of the second war in the DRC, running in the years 1998 - 2003, can be considered as raw materials, or the efforts of rebel groups and neighboring countries to control and subsequent illegal mining of mineral wealth of The Congo; 2nd although ethnic factors are not the main cause of the second Congolese war, their impact on the conflict, especially in the early days of the conflict is obvious; 3rd nature of the State, namely the weakness of the Government of DRC, ranked according to key indicators, turns out to be the most...

Komparační studie čtyř romských životních příběhů

The objective of this thesis is to do a comparative analysis of four Romany life-stories in prose from different parts of the world and identify features which may justly be called characteristic of Romany writing. The comparison of Victor Vishnevsky's Memories of a Gypsy, Mikey Walsh's Gypsy Boy and Gypsy Boy on the Run, Andrej Giňa's Paťiv. Ještě víme, co je úcta and Irena Eliášová's Naše osada yields valuable insights into how Romany writers construct their identity and to what extent their current work relates to the existing literary genres. Because of Romany studies' multidisciplinary nature, the extensive introduction lays the theoretical foundations for the analysis. I proceed from the characteristics of Romany studies in general in part 1.2 to the way it was practised during my undergraduate years in Prague as opposed to the Western tradition (part 1.3). Using a case study of the schism Romany studies are currently facing in the Czech Republic, in part 1.4 I attempt to illustrate the more general epistemological challenges the field has been grappling with between essentialist/primordialist and radical constructivist views.
